Everyone say CHEESE!
Guynard Pines, IOW
Great family holidays at Guynard Pines on the Isle of Wight.
Check out those sun tans ;o)

1991 Interailing

Groove the funky bubble coat!
Jan 2000, Meribel (Les Trois Valleys) - France
First ever skiing holiday!
Went with Julian and Joanne from work. Stayed in a swanky hotel which seemed to be entirely staffed by trainee waiters.
Runs were icy, only ventured out on the greens and a couple of blues.
Scariest moment must have been the fondue evening in the attic of an all wood chalet.

Scenery like Scotland .. just bigger!
Sep 2000, Canada
Yes we really did go camping on our honeymoon!
Travelled from Calgary to Seattle via Banff and Lake Louise in a minibus tour organised by Trek America.
Some classic moments such as discovering bear tracks whilst mountain biking in the woods, Alan's stodgy spaghetti, and dining in the Calgary tower in cycling kit.

Pop!
Dec 2000, Courchevel (Les Trois Valleys) - France
Just the two of us. Travelled down on the train, definitely the best way to travel.
Snow conditions were excellent. Lots of snow and soft powder. All time favourite resort.
Skied over to Meribel to check out the new Altiport 8 man chair which interestingly only serves a nursery run.
Watching planes take off at Courchevel Altiport was fun.

Sunbathing!
Feb 2001, Val d'Isere (Espace Killy) - France
Ski holiday organised by Eve and Norman, conveniently travelling down by train again.
First outing for snow blades and new boots bought whilst at the resort.
Great weather, great company, shame about the resort! Not steep enough for me... too much schussing (or walking in my case).
The funiculars proved very effective people shifters. Nice views and runs off of La Grande Motte 3656m and super wide Face black run back to the chalet.

Amazing engineering
Sep 2001, Llangollen Canal - Wales
One amazing canal system!
Highlight of the trip being the 1000 feet long 126 feet high cast-iron Pontcysyllte aqueduct which is just like one big long scary log flume.
This photo shows the canal on the lower level and the railway on the higher level at Chirk.

Lunar landscape
Dec 2001, Glencoe - Scotland
Walking holiday in Scotland with HF Holidays.
Christmas Day out on the mountains, you can't beat that!
Interesting slide show from mountain rescue, and only three people fainted!
Driving home in the snow without chains, scary stuff.

Skiing with Cathy and Roland
Feb 2002, Alpe d'Huez - France
Skiing holiday with Cathy and Roland.
Drove down. Started on the back roads, but following a few laps of Reims and classic navigation advice from Roland to head for Luxemburg, took to the Toll roads.
Tried parascending, it's great, and not as scary as the Leissieres Express chair which goes up to the top of the ridge then straight down the other side.
Snowboarded the last day, managed the nursery slope three times and gained stacks of bruises.

Bit flat round here ...
Mar 2002, Bourton on the Water - Cotswolds
Another week away with HF Holidays, this time walking in the low lands.
Stayed in historic Harrington House, a little tricky to find as all the brochure pictures show the back of the building!
Great food and company, slow and flat walks compared to Scotland.

Great jigsaw scenery
May 2002, Norfolk Broads
Imagine this view day after day ... that's the broads!
Did several jigsaws and had lots of cooked breakfasts, yum ;o)

Campsite so steep they ridged it!
July 2002, Nice - France
Cycle camping in the South of France.
Bargain £19.50 flight from Easy Jet including bike.
Warning... if the campsite is called scenic, it's going to be at the top of a hill!
Ate lots of mussels and cycled to the top of the Gorges du Verdon on the hottest day ever, the next shady spot's mine!

Carefully does it
Aug 2002, Keswick - Lake District
Family holiday to the Lake District.
Started off with Alan doing an awesome bit of road rage parking in the overcrowded supermarket.
Highlight was walking Striding Edge, one false move and you fall to oblivion!

Blue sky
Jan 2003, Flaine (Le Grand Massif) - France
Easy drive, lots of snow, no queues, good self catering and great company.
Amazing views of the neighbouring mountains down in clouds.
Jacqueline managed a red on her first week, woohoo!
Roland cracked his goggles and split his lip on the slalom, then carried on to ski blacks for the rest of the afternoon, way to go!
Snowboarding lesson on the last day.

The red sea
Dec 2003, Taba Heights - Sinai Peninsula Egypt
Stayed at the Marriott, one of three hotels at the resort at the time.
Spent most of the time snorkelling from the hotel. Saw parrotfish, clownfish, lionfish and a rock fish amongst others.
Had a go diving at the nearby Scuba centre and took a boat trip where we were joined by a couple local dolphins.
Eventually discovered all the fish in the restaurant aquariums, those sea horses are hard to spot!
Loved the New Years Eve additional tax on alcohol.
Went on a jeep adventure to the coloured canyons and back via the drivers brothers cousins restaurant.

I'm the one in the background ...
Jan 2004, Les Arcs (Paradiski) - France
A whole week snowboarding ...
Over half the class dropped out due to injuries. Still not sure if I'm goofy or normal!
Didn't get to see much of the resort, although did do a few laps of the night run on the blades.
Awesome sculptures in the ice cave.

Wahay !
Jul 2004, Belfast - Ireland
A long weekend in Belfast to visit an ex work colleague.

Also did a bit of exploring and looked round the botanic gardens.

Hadrians Wall
Oct 2004, Newcastle - Tyne & Wear
Week in Newcastle with Bob exploring the ruins of Hadrians Wall whilst Alan worked in the Northumberland Finefoods biscuit factory.
Stopped off at the worlds slowest cafe on the way home.

Balanced on the edge of the world ...
Dec 2004, Conwy - Wales
Yet another HF Holidays walking holiday!
Great food, company and entertainment as expected.
Fantastic moonscape scenery.
Embarrassing giggles during the classical music recital, is bottomosfy really a composer?
Checked out the shops in Betws-y-Coed. Travelled home via Portmeirion, strange place!

Fetiye bay
Jun 2005, Fetiye - Turkey
Four star fully inclusive luxury at the Letoonia Club Hotel.
Much preferred the children's fruit cocktail to the adult one, loved the restaurant on the beech, disliked the hotel photographer.
Visited Kayakoy, the village abandoned by the Greeks, and the Blue Lagoon. Saw a real tortoise crossing the road!
Took our PADI open water diver with the Mermaid Diving School, best moment sitting on the bottom waiting for the controlled ascent.
Not really that many fish to see compared to Egypt but did see quite a few octopi round the hotel peninsula and a turtle in Fetiye harbour.

A gentle stroll
Jun 2005, Pengenffordd - Wales
Weekend away with Mike and the High Wycombe Hash. Some nice walks, good company and food, and came back with a dog!

The Green Rocket
Dec 2005, Mayrhofen - Austria
Thought Austria might be nice for a change, unfortunately so did all the Russians, mega queues everywhere!
New Years Eve meal was a new experience ... we got everything on the menu!
Skied Austria's steepest ski run, steep but incredibly short.
Joined up with the green rocket for some speed blading.

Typical British holiday !
Feb 2006, Eype - Dorset
Family and dog holiday.
Stayed at Golden Acre Holiday Bungalows within walking distance of the beech..
Looked for fossils at Lyme Regis, walked along Chesil Beach (very hard going) visited Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens.
Managed to avoid Deefa jumping over the cliff edge after a stick.

Aug 2006, Ludlow, Shropshire
I can get across...
Shortbreak walking in Shropshire.
Embarassing moment when D4 ran across the bed whilst the owner was showing us round, whoops!

Lisbon
Sep 2006, Lisbon - Portugal
A weekend away with my best friends to the relaxed city of Lisbon.
Lots of site seeing but also time for chilling out.
Stayed at the campsite and used the bus, tram and metro systems to get about, plus a fair bit of walking.
Visited the Oceanarium, the Torre de Belém, St George's Castle and the Parque dans Nações where we saw a great firework display.

It's cold out there!
Feb 2007, Megeve - France
Atkins Ski Trip.
Great lessons from Simon Butler.
Not the best skiing conditions, very slushy at the bottom, and had to queue for the gondola each morning.
Slalom race was fun. The Olympic run to get to it was also fun!

Wet Dog
Mar 2007, Harleston - Suffolk
A week in Suffolk visiting Sheila and Oscar.
Lots of walking plus visits to Bressingham Gardens, Southwold Pier and Norwich Castle.

Jun 2007, Kingstone - Herefordshire
One week essential training residential holiday with Philippa & Dawn at Dogs for Life.
Excellent course which completely changed our understanding of dogs and dog training.
Nice food and accomodation at Webton Court Farmhouse.
Severe flooding on the drive home.

A rare dry shot!
Jul 2007, Darwin Forest - Derbyshire
Rain, rain and more rain, this holiday was a bit of a wash out.
Did manage to do some walks, visit the Crich Tramway Village (dog friendly) and buy a new car!

Levada walking
Jul 2008, Madeira - Portugal
An action packed long weekend walking along the levadas, with our personal taxi guide making sure we didn't waste a minute.
Particular favourites were the botanical gardens, the view from Curral das Freiras and the Santa Maria Pirate Ship.
Still had wet hair when the plane took off!

Sheila and Alan

Walking holiday with Sheila and Oscar.
Took the dogs on a boat trip round Whitby and a train ride on the North Yorkshire Railway.
Impressed with the circular vegetable plots at Scampston Walled Garden.
Loved the ethos of Helmsley Walled Garden.
Enjoyed the audio guide at Whitby Abbey, rushed round Castle Howard in the rain and took a long walk to Staithes.

Just don't go there !
Aug 2008, Hughada & Cairo - Egypt
The worst holiday ever, we combined sun burn with gut rot, and spent most of our time ill in bed.
On the plus we did get to see the Olympics on TV and do loads of Sudokos!
Nice reef just in front of the hotel complex where we saw parrotfish, butterflyfish, bluespotted stingray and moray eels.
Visited the pyramids (NO we don't want a camel ride), and the Cairo museum (great air-conditioning).
Had an adventure getting to the airport as the first taxi didn't turn up and the second taxi broke down.

River Wye
Oct 2008, Symonds Yat - Herefordshire
Walking holiday with Deefa.
Lots of great walks, plus exploring Goodrich Castle and Witley Court Gardens, both of which are dog friendly.

Flaine 2009

Another great week skiing in Flaine.
Stayed in the Montsoleil apartments complete with swimming pool, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, gym, underground car park and locker room direct onto slopes.
Evening snow shoeing expedition to the top of the mountain where we drank wine, ate cooked meats, cheese and bread.
Enjoyed the 14km les cascades down to Salvagny.

Amazing sculptures made of flowers
Apr 2009, Noorwijkerhout - Holland
Family holiday to see the Bollenstreek Flower Parade and Keukenhof gardens.
Luxurious journey over with Stena Line on the Britannica, sleeping in Captain Class and Captain Suite Cabins.
Watched the illuminated parade in Noordwiijk, and again in the morning by the hotel, and yet again by the Keukenhof gardens in the afternoon.
Gardens were pretty, although overcrowded to start with. Floats were spectacular, amazing what one can do with hyacinth heads.
Inspected them at close range in Haarlem before our journey home.

Who needs teeth anyway
Jan 2010, Flaine (Le Grande Massif) - France
Flaine again!
Arrived amidst a heavy snow fall but managed to make it up the mountain OK.
Slug injured her legs and I cracked a tooth.
Synchronised iTunes ski playlists, Up and Down by the Vengaboys was the best..
Best runs:- the Marvel with animal information, the Combe de Veret off the Tourmaline, and the Corbalanche bowl.
The 1st Black Saturday, 8 blacks in 1 day and you're driving because I'm knackered!

Look no legs!
Mar 2010, Val Cenis - France
Standard Thomson package holiday, with first ever decent rep in the resort.
Met up with Nicole and the Bretagne ski group.
Easy skiing, although very windy in the valley of Lac du Mont Cenis. Great walks along the bottom of the ski runs and lots of cross country skiing.
Excellent mountain bike demo in the evening, although the music was a bit odd.

Just walking the dog ...
Jun 2010, Clacton on Sea - Essex
House sitting for my parents.
Trips out to Colchester Zoo, the Great British Circus, the Tendering Show, Felixstowe Museum, the Languard Fort, Harwich powerboat festival and Flixton Aviation Museum.

Dover Castle
Aug 2010, Dover & Calais
Daily Mail £1 trip to Calais with P&O Ferries.
Stayed at the nearby campsite, ended up sleeping in the boot of the car as it rained so much, was actually very comfortable.

Walmer by far the most interesting with the Wellington museum and pretty garden.

Incognito couple on chair lift
Mar 2011, Les Arcs (Paradiski) - France
20 hour coach journey to meet up with Nicole and the Bretagne ski group.
Compact yet practical apartment in Arcs 1800, just don't stretch your arms out in bed as you'll hit the ceiling!
Glorious sunshine plus two days of snow. Several runs closed due to lack of snow and lower runs slushy in the afternoon.
Favourite runs were the foret which wiggled through the trees, the hari-kari in the middle of nowhere, and the mercedes u shaped bowl in La Plagne.

First trip abroad with Deefa and his doggy passport.
Stayed in the Roguennic Campsite right on the sea front much to Deefas delight. Had some good walks with Nicole and Polut and fitted in a visit to the trembling rock at Heulgoat.
Enjoyed the metiers bargain three course set lunches in Cleder and Kerfissien, unlike the French we had orange juice not wine with ours!
Stopped off en-route at the very posh and dog friendly Lavender House Hotel, Okehampton.

A sick bunny
Mar 2012, Serre Chevalier (Grande Galaxie) - France
Drove down via Paris where we ate way too much Raclette with David. Then spent most of the week trying to recover from colds.
Favourite runs were the 3 Croix which had crocuses flowering on the side of it and the Le Chemin down to Briancon. The Luc Alpand back to Chantemerle varied daily.
Absolutely awesome firework display after the torch lit descent, which echoed round the mountains thunderously.
Great little apartment not far from the slopes, next to one of the two churches, which strangely chimed two minutes apart.

Skiing with the Bretons
Mar 2012, Les Deux Alpes (Grande Galaxie) - France
A short drive up the road to meet up with the Association Loisirs-Montagne at the Hotel Grizzly.
Rather boring resort which due to the high altitude lacks scenic tree lined runs. Signage very poor and pistes marked as open were often closed.
On the plus, gorgeous sunny weather and fun to be skiing with our new French friends. Enjoyed the outdoor swimming pool in the town and the Jacuzzi and Sauna in the hotel.
Managed to show a bit of restraint on the help yourself breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Don't think anyone slept well, every room had a snorer it seemed, although everyone denied being a snorer!
Stan & Donna smooth talked The Boot at Soulbury to open early for us, the homemade fruitcake and coffee & walnut cakes went down well.
